When I launched the firm in December of 1999, the first applications I filed were on paper, and this provides me the opportunity now to look both forward and backward on this topic. If or when you receive a trademark registration now, you can pay a small fee to receive a paper copy from the USPTO.

And despite a dip in filings during the spring, the pace of filings continued to grow in summer and fall. The number of applications filed, and registrations granted in FY2020 both grew over the prior year, to the highest in history. But filings rebounded, including a record number from China. trademark registrations!

While YouTube’s terms of service generally disallow downloading, in Germany there is the right to make a private copy, with local rights group GEMA collecting fees to compensate for just that. And the alleged illegality of youtube-dl is indeed controversial. After more than a year, the warring factions are no closer to an agreement.
