44% of Top 100 University U.S. Patent Holders are Foreign Institutions; 8 of the Top 22

Almost half of the top 100 colleges, universities and research institutes that have been granted U.S. patents are located outside of America.

For the most recent year that data has been tabulated, 2021, three of the top 10 U.S. grantees are non-U.S. institutions, as well as eight of the top 22. In total, 44 of the top 100 recipients, 44%, of U.S. grants are foreign.

Number three, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, is a South Korean government-funded research institution. Number five, Industrial Technology Research Institute, is a technology research and development institution in Taiwan.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences is number eight on the list. It is the national academy, research organization, consultancy of the People’s Republic of China for natural sciences. It is the world’s largest research organization, with 100 research institutes, three universities, 69,000 full-time employees, and 79,000 graduate students.

It is not necessarily good or bad for a large number of foreign universities and research institutions to have an increasing number of U.S. patents. It reflects the general issuance of U.S. patents to inventors/ businesses, a little more than half of which are traditionally awarded to foreign domiciled businesses.

Growing Seriousness

The growing number of non-U.S. universities and research institutes represent a change from past top 100 lists, and is an indication of the sophistication of research institutions and the seriousness with which they value their inventions and how they hope to commercialize them.

Perennial U.S. patent leaders, University of California, MIT, Harvard and Stanford are in the top ten. Number two overall is a surprise, to some, the State University System of Florida.

Purdue at number 12 with 181 patents granted, bested Caltech, Johns Hopkins and the University of Michigan, as well as several Ivy League universities
