As we enjoy a bit of time off over the holidays, here are a few books you may want to read. These are selected from books I read this year. My suggestions are an eclectic assortment of books with topics on AI, micro-chips, quantum computing, gene patenting litigation, values and the climate crisis, a biography of Elon Musk, and, for those interested, books on longevity. Here is a short summary of each suggested book.
The Equality Machine by Orly Lobel – This book offers a critical examination of AI’s role in shaping equality in modern society. With all the criticisms of bias in AI, Orly Lobel offers insights into how AI can promote equality and dispels myths about AI.
Chip Wars by Chris Miller – This book describes the decades long battle to control what has emerged as the world’s most critical resource—microchip technology. It’s also a great read for people interested in science, tech policy, and innovation. Canada is not even on the map.
Quantum Supremacy by Michio Kaku – Michio Kaku brings quantum computing’s potentially world-altering impact to life. This is a field where Canada has an advantage and we need to keep it.
The Genome Defense by Jorge Conteras – An interesting tale of the legal fight over gene patenting, blending science, law, and ethics. It’s a great read for lawyers who are interested in biotech law, litigation strategy, and how to fight for causes they believe in.
Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson – A biography that chronicles the life of one of the most polarizing and visionary figures in the tech industry. Love him or hate him, he is one of the tech pioneers of our time. There are great insights into how to build innovative companies. There are also useful insights into Musk’s perspectives on AI.
Values by Mark Carney – Dive into a thought-provoking discussion on how societal values and market forces intersect and influence each other. Good book from the former Governor of the Bank of Canada which also highlights the challenges associated with the climate crisis.
Power and Prediction by Ajay Agrawal – A look into the power of AI in prediction and its profound implications on society and business.
For those of you interested in the science of longevity I recommend Outlive by Peter Attia. Peter Attia is a longevity specialist who provides useful recommendations for those interested in the latest developments in longevity science.
Another good book is Young Forever by Dr. Mark Hyman. Dr Hyman is one of the leading longevity doctors whose book describes his program for longer life and health spans. If you are interested in this topic, you may want to read my blog post on longevity, Health and longevity: help to keep your new years resolutions.
Best for holidays and new year and happy reading!
