- I had the pleasure of speaking at the 31st Annual Fordham Institute Property Law & Policy Conference earlier today. In my view the Fordham conference continues to be the best IP conference anywhere, in terms of attendees, the quality of the program, and speakers. (Where else could you ending up sitting next to [the legendary] Justice Arnold of the U.K. Court of Appeal or talking about copyright or other IP topics with the leading lawyers, academics, and judges from around the world in the field of IP including copyrights, patents, and trademarks?. Not surprisingly, this year had a focus on artificial intelligence (AI).
My panel was moderated by Sandra Aistars (Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University). The other speakers and panelist were:
- Professor Jane Ginsburg (Columbia Law School) whose topic was “Transforming ‘Transformative Use’?: The Future of Fair Use in Light of Andy Warhol Foundation v. Goldsmith (US 2023)”
- Susan Scafidi (Fordham Law School) whose topic was IP issues re “Steamboat Willie”
- David O. Carson (U.S. Copyright Claims Board) whose topic was “The Copyright Claims Board: A Progress Report”
- Christopher Davis (Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP) (panelist)
My topic was U.S. Copyright Developments: Perspectives from across the border. I focused on parallel copyright developments in Canada and the U.S. highlighting similarities and differences in approaches.
