A video recently shot and edited by University of Colorado, Colorado Springs students asked three timely questions:
- What do students know about intellectual property rights?
- What do they believe?
- Is it accurate?
‘IP Awareness at UCCS’ was part of a team project for Bachelor of Innovation 
program students at UCCS. Interviewers ask students prepared questions about their knowledge and attitudes. Majors included computer science, business, physics and nursing. Questions were built around how IP interacted with students’ lives.
Adverse Circumstances
The interviews were conducted primarily in March, when due to the pandemic class attendance was still optional and mask-
wearing was required. However, the Covid restrictions did not stop the resourceful student team from getting the job done.
Some subjects are maskedand some are seen full-face on a screen via Zoom. The project was mentored by the Center for Intellectual Property (CIPU), an independent non-profit. The video can be found on CIPU’s YouTube Channel.
Leading Experts
In the video, Manny Schecter, a CIPU board member and Chief Patent Counsel at IBM, responds to student responses. So does Dan Brown, an award-winning inventor, entrepreneur and a Professor of Design Innovation at Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering.
