1: Warner Music, Rock Band Jesus and Mary Chain End U.S. Copyright Lawsuit

First off today, Blake Brittain at Reuters reports that the band The Jesus and Mary Chain have reached a settlement in their lawsuit against Warner Music over the band’s attempt to reclaim the copyright in some of their songs.

The lawsuit was filed by founding members, Jim and William Reid, who sought to use copyright termination to reclaim the rights to their 1985 debut album Psychocandy. Copyright termination is a process in the United States where original creators can terminate transfers and exclusive licenses of their work after a period of time.

According to the lawsuit, Warner was refusing to acknowledge their notices, but Warner claimed that the lawsuit was time-barred and that the termination breached a contract the band had with the label. Though a trial was scheduled for September, the case has been settled. However, no details about the settlement have been released.

2: Vietnam-Based Piracy Website Shut Down

Next up today, Phan Anh and Luu Quy at VN Express reports that a Vietnam-based website known for distributing pirated content has been shuttered following actions by the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE).

The website, USTVGO, had been in operation since 2018 and specialized in providing illegal access to American television. Though based in Vietnam, the site reportedly received some 75% of its traffic from the United States.

ACE did not say how they shut down the site, but not only is the site itself dark, but so are all the site’s social media accounts. ACE, for its part, said that it is using “all available tools” to shut down similar sites operating in Vietnam.

3: Tom Grennan Caught Up in Shock Legal Row Over Hit Song

Finally today, Simon Boyle at The Sun reports that British artist Tom Grennan is facing a lawsuit over his 2016 hit song Something in the Water.

According to comments made on his podcast, Brennan is being sued by an unnamed artist who claims to have written the lyrics for the track. Grennan claims to have composed the lyrics himself, but didn’t write them down due to his dyslexia.

As such, he says, even though he wrote the song, he has no evidence that he did so. He is hoping that someone recorded an earlier performance of that song and may be able to help out his case.
