The World Intellectual Property Association Arbitration Center (WIPO AMC) has released its recent statistics on alternative dispute resolution mechanisms (ADR). In 2023, WIPO was involved in the resolution of 679 disputes related to intellectual property, innovation, and technology disputes.

WIPO reported a 24% increase in the referral of cases from 2022 and an impressive 280% surge in the last 5 years. Among these disputes, 43% were related to copyright and digital content, 27% to trademarks, and 10% to patents, including high-profile SEPs/FRAND. Moreover, WIPO AMC witnessed another record year in domain name disputes, with nearly 6,200 complaints filed by brand owners in 2023.

There were notable increases in mediation requests for copyright and digital content disputes, particularly in collaboration with the Colombian and Mexican copyright offices.

A significant portion of the disputes referred to WIPO AMC involved Latin American parties (59%), with Colombia seeing substantial increase in case participation over the last 4 years. This growth is attributed to collaboration in promoting alternative means of dispute resolution with state agencies such as the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce and the National Directorate of Copyright.
