An NFT is a Smart Contract, meaning that it embeds specific basic contract terms in the NFT metadata that goes onto the blockchain. Was that ownership transferred, and if so, to whom?

It is basically a distributed database that can achieve independent verification of the ownership chain of any or every cryptocurrency (amount) as each node stores its own copy of the blockchain.
